Prof Wieler is Chair of the Digital Health Cluster at Hasso Plattner Institute in Potsdam and Prof of Digital Global Public Health. He is the former President of the Robert Koch Institute, the national Public Health Institute of Germany. As an infectious disease expert, his research focuses on zoonotic diseases in a One Health context, particularly on molecular mechanisms enabling zoonotic pathogens to adapt to different hosts and develop resistance to antibiotics. Prof Wieler works towards building a global, concerted multidisciplinary effort based on One Health to slow the increase in AMR and improve standards of care focusing on preventive measures. He has published more than 250 scientific articles, is co founder of the German national research platform on zoonoses, member of the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and various scientific advisory boards among others STAG-IH of WHO. Since September 2020 he chairs the International Health Regulations Review Committee (IHR-RC) convened by the WHO Director-General. Prof Wieler is a veterinarian and microbiologist, and received his doctorate from the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich.
