Background: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) contributes to almost 5 million deaths annually, most of which are in low- and middle-income countries. Antimicrobial use in agrifood systems is common and has an influence on antimicrobial resistance in humans, animals, plants and the environment. Applying a One Health approach, there is a critical need to transform agrifood systems to optimize animal, plant and environmental health, ensure responsible and sustainable antimicrobial use and most importantly, reduce the need to use antimicrobials and promote innovation for evidence-based and sustainable alternatives.  The Global Leaders Group (GLG) on AMR collaborates globally with governments, agencies, civil society and the private sector through a One Health approach. The GLG highlights transformation of agrifood systems as a key priority area for addressing AMR, including a focus on infection prevention and control.  The GLG also prioritized the critical need for financing to address AMR in food systems.

In March 2022, UNGA resolution A/RES/76/257 was adopted and established a High-level Meeting on AMR to be held in UNGA 2024 in collaboration with the Quadripartite organizations and with support of the GLG. In its ongoing and early discussions, the GLG identified key areas relevant for the Political Declaration on AMR in UNGA 2024 that require consideration for bold and specific commitments, including linked to agrifood systems. Other areas envisioned for the HLM outcome document include: Financing to implement sector-specific and multisectoral NAPs and novel investment approaches for R&D; Accountable governance structures to implement AMR response across sectors; Surveillance for action in all sectors; Effective and Transformed systems across One Health sectors; AMR and pandemic preparedness and response (PPR), and Evidence- and outcome-oriented targets for actions that can drive change across sectors.
