Political Leadership and Action on Antimicrobial Resistance: The Road to the 2024 UNGA High-level Meeting on AMR

New York , USA

Opening remarks: Her Excellency Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh, Co-Chair of the GLG [TBC] and Her Excellency Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley of Barbados, Co-Chair of the GLG Moderated by: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health Christopher Fearne of Malta, GLG member Format: Statements of leaders on political actions needed to address the global AMR crisis Background: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites change over time and no longer respond to medicines, making infections harder to treat and increasing the risk of disease spread, severe illness and death. AMR contributes to almost 5 million deaths annually, most of which are in low- and middle-income countries. The World Bank estimates that an additional 24 million people would be forced into extreme poverty by 2030 if no action is taken on AMR today. AMR poses serious threats to human, animal, plant and environmental health, food safety, food security, and pandemic prevention preparedness and response. The Global Leaders Group on Antimicrobial Resistance (GLG) was established by the Quadripartite organizations (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, United Nations Environment Programme, World Health Organization and World Organisation for Animal Health) to accelerate political action on AMR, based on a One Health approach. The GLG is comprised of world leaders and experts from across sectors working together to accelerate political action on AMR based on the One Health approach. In 2021, GLG members participated in the UNGA High-level Interactive Dialogue on Antimicrobial Resistance and outlined their vision to maintain urgency, public support, political momentum and visibility of AMR on the global agenda. In March 2022, UNGA resolution A/RES/76/257 was adopted and established a High-level Meeting on AMR to be held in UNGA 2024 in collaboration with the Quadripartite organizations and the GLG.
