The sixth meeting of the Global Leaders Group on AMR

Barbados

The sixth meeting of the GLG

What: The sixth meeting of the Global Leaders Group (GLG) on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) will take place in Barbados and will be the first in-person meeting for the GLG.

Who: The sixth meeting of the GLG is hosted by GLG Chair, Her Excellency Mia Amor Mottley, Prime Minister of Barbados and will be attended by GLG members and Quadripartite principals both in-person and virtually. The GLG is comprised of world leaders and experts from across sectors working together to accelerate political action on AMR based on the One Health approach and achieve optimal and sustainable health outcomes for people, animals and ecosystems. The GLG collaborates globally with governments, agencies, civil society and the private sector.

The Quadripartite Joint Secretariat (QJS) on Antimicrobial Resistance, a joint effort by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) provide secretariat support for the GLG.

Why: During their meeting, the GLG will cover critical AMR topics such as financing, research and development, AMR surveillance, the role of the private sector, AMR and the environment, animal health and galvanizing political action to address AMR. The discussion will prepare and inform potential outcomes at the high-level meeting on AMR at UNGA 2024 to develop bold and specific commitments to address AMR.

The GLG will formally welcome five new members during its sixth meeting in Barbados. The five new members, selected and appointed after a 2022 nomination process and announced 1 February 2023, bring diverse AMR expertise across One Health sectors including human, animal, plant and environmental health, and will support the GLG’s efforts in galvanizing political action to address AMR in their respective roles.

How: The sixth meeting of the GLG is a closed meeting. A formal meeting report discussing meeting outcomes will be available on the GLG website after the meeting takes place.
