Background:  The Global Leaders Group (GLG) on AMR is chaired by H.E. Mia Amor Mottley, Prime Minister of Barbados.  The GLG collaborates globally with governments, agencies, civil society and the private sector for global action to address the urgent crisis of AMR through a One Health approach. Since its inaugural meeting in January 2021, the GLG has identified youth as part of the necessary advocacy to intensify political and popular support for efforts to tackle AMR across sectors and to popularize AMR as a social concern. A GLG high-level side event was held during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Kigali, Rwanda in June 2022, where youth leaders from the Commonwealth joined the dialogue on AMR with political leaders.

In March 2022, United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) resolution A/RES/76/257 was adopted and established a High-level Meeting (HLM) on AMR to be held in UNGA 2024 in collaboration with the Quadripartite organizations (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations- FAO, United Nations Environment Programme- UNEP, World Health Organization- WHO and World Organisation for Animal Health- WOAH) and with support of the GLG. In its ongoing and early discussions, the GLG identified key areas relevant for the Political Declaration on AMR in UNGA 2024 that require consideration for bold and specific commitments including AMR addressed as part of biodiversity and climate solutions and the strong link between AMR and pandemic preparedness and response.

Youth are central in achieving a healthier future and a more sustainable and healthier planet. Young people have a special role in instigating change and action on the pressing global challenges the world faces today. Equally, they are pivotal to finding innovative solutions that speak to local and global realities. Young people are also future consumers and professionals, who will be making choices and taking spending decisions. Therefore, engagement of youth is key to promote healthy futures and prevent AMR together.
